When the city of Taichung built a new airport, they were left with the old one, which was pretty big, but a bigger question loomed abut what to do with the site. An international competition was held and Stan Allen Architects won the commission for “Taichung Gateway.” The best place to learn about that project is now inside a new one: a faceted bamboo box built inside one of the airport’s former hangars. The bamboo box, called the Taichung InfoBox is also the work of Allen’s office. Models, drawings and computer animations of SAA’s proposed transformation of the former airport are all on display here, and out of the windows, visitors can watch the progress of the sites transformation.
