We went to a pretty silly but cool but weird but silly event last night: the launch of Ron English and Chris Brown’s Dum English, a new vinyl toy collaboration from the modern king of pop art and the controversial musician. The event was held at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City and was literally centered on Ron and Chris painting a giant Dum English “Star Skull Astronaut” sculpture, which was being sold at $40K. The event attracted art insiders, art journalists, super serious music industry people, and–of course–tons of girls who stood outside of the gallery as if it were a nightclub, each vying for even the smallest look from Chris.
It was certainly an experience and truly took pop art to a new level, the pop artist collaborating with the pop star to make a pop cultural figure: it’s like an artistic universe imploded on itself and the “Star Skull Astronaut” is the result of it. English also had a few paintings up in the space, including the cover he did for Chris’ recent F.A.M.E. album–but so did Chris: there were seven of his pretty large paintings for sale at the show as well (which looked like Basquiat through the lens of a pop star who wants to be a painter). We’re not sure if we’ll ever have the chance to witness such a happening again but, boy, was it surreal.
