‘Old Spice Guy’ and ‘The Nyan Cat’ by Mick Minogue

I love the work of Irish illustrator Mick Minogue! Influenced by pop culture and nostalgia, he has created some really cool pieces; from his images of Daft Punk at Christmas to his Real Human Being board-game (where ‘Operation’ meets ‘Drive’). The ideas are always clever and his style is always so much fun.

The two pieces above come from work made especially for the Meme’s show at LA’s Gallery1988. The exhibition opened last Friday at their space in Melrose and was put together to celebrate eight years of the gallery. As you can see, it’s inspired by two great internet memes: The Old Spice Ad and The Nyan Cat.

I love the idea of taking the Old Spice Ad and turning Isaiah Mustafa into a ‘Master Of The Universe’ style action figure. You should check out Mick’s blog for more images of the piece, as it shows all his changeable parts and the amazing vintage-style box it comes in. His ‘Nyan Cat’ is also really great. Mick imagines the cat to be a large spaceship called ‘The Nyan Cat Ship’ and he’s filled it with some of the internets most famous cats. There’s so many wonderfully little details in his work and I love the thought of Star Wars’ Admiral Ackbar being the captain of a ship filled with cats. Make sure to check out more of Mick’s work here and if you’re in LA head down to Melrose and check out the rest of the show.
