While Bobby and his life partner Kyle wander around New York City (New York City!), here is a project from the coast they have temporarily abandoned: the so-called Eel’s Nest designed by Anonymous Architects. Built in Echo Park, the design earns its moniker from similarly-narrow apartments in Japan¬†colloquially¬†known as eel’s nests. To give the inhabitants a little more breathing room on a tiny lot, the firm sought special permission to build above the planning guidelines. The massing of the apartment is a simple, upward extrusion that is finished with different materials on floors for people compared to the ground floor (for parking.) Add a couple of huge windows, and the apartment is as bright and airy as only a west coast apartment can be.
