Spike Jonze, one of my favorite directors, has started filming his new movie tentatively titled Her, which tells the tale of a man falling in love with a piece of technology. The man in question is named Theodore and is played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is joined by Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Samantha Morton rounding out the cast.
In the not so distant future, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.
It’s also interesting that Spike Jonze is directing the film as well as writing the script, the first time he’s ever written a full length movie. You’d think he would have done something like that by now? And how funny is it that he’s written a script that’s essentially about a man falling in love with Siri. I don’t even think it’s that crazy of an idea, I just don’t think technology and culture is there yet. We’ve all heard those stories of young guys falling in love with anime characters, that the lines of fantasy and reality may be beginning to blur.
