Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP Co., Ltd. designed the Tokyu Plaza to welcome visitors to Tokyo’s fashion district. Located at the intersection of Omotesando and Harajuku, the building greets pedestrians with an escalator that ascends through a dramatic tunnel of faceted mirrors to a day-lit interior capped by a green roof. Much of the project’s program is devoted to fashionable retail shops (that is, fashionable as long as we exclude the Tommy Hilfiger store.) The newest building at the corner has been described as a fashion fortress, probably thanks to the cut-out terraces that roughly resemble a castellated roofline. Medieval battlements aside, the project is distinctly contemporary and a handsome– if not trippy- addition to Tokyo’s fashion district.
