Meanwhile in Spain, the eighteenth century Convent de Sant Francesc has been updated to better serve its community as a cultural hub, but also to keep the church from falling down. Architect David Closes started with a church in partial ruin: “the roof had sunk, the choir had disappeared, and the vaults of the nave and chapels had partially fallen.” So the architect has made a series of distinct and contemporary interventions into the space to help preserve the church as a piece of the town’s history, ensuring that the church will continue to serve the town in a slightly less sacred capacity. The former church is already being utilized as a multipurpose space and auditorium, and further work on the church will add historic archives in former chapels.
