Over the past seven years, a new ice skating rink has been taking shape in Liége, quite an unusual shape for a building in the Belgian city. Or maybe anywhere. The folks responsible are L’Escaut Architecture and BE Weinand, and just to be clear, they did not set out to build an ice rink inside a whale… it just kind of happened.

What they set out to construct was something “round, fluid with generous shape, as a metaphor of a universe of ice.” When they finished the building had aluminum scales. Indeed, the architects are well-aware of the sea mammal they’ve built, and in their description of the project they ask if being inside the cold whale is the same as being “inside Venturi’s duck.”
