When the MaKey MaKey made its Kickstarter debut the team issued a challenge: Make something amazing with this. The little microcontroller (Arduino based, ya nerds) can turn any object that conducts an electrical current into a keyboard key or a mouse. From linking The possibilities really are endless, I mean, you can turn a beach ball into a mouse.
For musicians, this simply means working with a whole bunch of new toys. By mapping a sound to a keyboard key and then linking it to an object with the MaKey MaKey anything can be used to trigger a sample. J. Viewz, known for the summer-drenched, chill-as-fuck song “Salty Air,” took the challenge with stride. In a live remix setting, he uses fruits and veggies to create a beautiful rendition of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop.” Without a doubt, this is way more fun to watch than someone pressing buttons on a stage. Like, how great would it be if someone was playing fettuccine alfredo and garlic bread?
