Re-Covered Film Posters: 'Battle Royale'

Battle Royale Posters

I was talking to staff writer Christina Stimpson a while back about doing a new version of the Re-Covered Books contest, but instead focused around film posters, which she has a huge affinity for. I too love film posters so we started playing around with the idea, teasing it on our Twitter and Facebook to see if readers would be interested. Sure enough, there was a resounding “Yes!” to the idea, so here we are.

But what would our first film poster be? There are so many amazing movies and posters out there, how do we pick one? Well, I listened to some readers as well as Christina’s feedback and we decided to start with Battle Royale, the 2000 Japanese action thriller which has become a cult classic around the world. If you’re unfamiliar with the film, here’s a quick synopsis.

A group of students from a Japanese high school are forced to compete in a battle, killing one another until only one is left standing.

I wanted to pick a film that was well known but wasn’t too popular in the mainstream (we do need to keep our edge). It also needed to be a film that was visually impactful, with lots of imagery to draw from. That said, here are some things to avoid while you’re designing: Too much blood, bloody hands, cliches about blood, bloody type, etc. Yes it’s a violent film but don’t go the easy route unless you have an idea that’s super clever and it’ll knock my socks off. Also, make it feel new and contemporary, and whatever you do DO NOT MAKE A MINIMAL FILM POSTER. If you’re unsure what I mean, click this link and learn what not to do.

Also, I’m setting a standard size for all posters, which is 800px wide x 1200px high, 72 DPI, RGB mode. If your poster was promoting a real film it would be in this dimension. If you do your film poster at a different size I’m going to ask that you redo it at the correct size.

The winner will receive a $50 gift card to Amazon.

RULES

• Save your images as JPGs at 800px wide x 1200px high, 72 DPI, RGB mode – this is super important! You can enter the contest up to 3 times.

• Label your files “Firstname-Lastname-Battle-Roayle-Poster.jpg”

• Send all entries to [email protected] with the subject “Re-Covered Film Posters: Battle Royale“. Cut and paste what I wrote there, it’s super easy and it helps me keep track of your entry.

• All entries are due Saturday, April 20, 2013 by Midnight PST.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with and be sure to tell your friends/classmates/pets to participate as well. Remember, this is a competition, may the best designer be left standing.
