Robert Glasper’s Daft Punk-esque cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Robert Glasper

Can you imagine how cool it would be if Daft Punk did a cover of Nirvana’s classic “Smells Like Teen Sprit”? Well, Robert Glasper may have just about hit the nail on the head with his own cover the song, channeling a Daft Punk vibe and combining it with experimental jazz.

When I first head this track I couldn’t believe how good it was. Doing a cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is ambitious to say the least, but Robert’s version is haunting, like a depressed, morose robot is performing in a smokey lounge. I mean, I never imagined ever writing those words about a song like this, ever. The song comes from his most recent album Black Radio, which was released in early 2012 on Blue Note. It’s a beautiful album and has guest stars like Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, and more. If you dig this track you’ll probably love the rest of the album as well.
