The New Grey Gardens

I first saw Grey Gardens based on a recommendation from an old friend of mine, who was absolutely in love with it. He was going to NYU for film at the time and had impeccable taste anyways, so I had to see it. The film definitely stuck with me, as Edie and Little Edie are two of the most amazing “characters” ever, and the Maysles did an amazing job of portraying this once beautiful women living in a run down mansion.

Well now Drew Barrymore and HBO are creating a film based upon the lives of the Bouviers, profiling they’re rise and fall. Drew Barrymore plays Little Edie while Jessica Lange plays older Edie. Overall I think it looks great, and Drew Barrymore looks and sounds pretty spot on, so I’m pretty excited. What do you think?

The HBO version comes out on April 19th, and you can read more about it by clicking here.

Official Where The Wild Thing Are Movie Poster

My beautiful co-worker Bernadette Matthews just pointed me in the direction of the brand new poster for the Where The Wild Things Are movie. All I can say is OMG WTF FTW YES! I’m so effin’ excited for this movie, and this poster is just further proof of how beautiful SPike Jonze’s vision is going to be.

Objectified Film Poster

Gary Hustwit and the folks over at the Objectified movie released a new poster designed by Michael Place and Build. It’s a beautiful metallic silver and black print showing a ton of the objects from the designers in the movie and more. And at 27 x 39 inches this thing is a beast! My favorite detail is that they slipped the movie title into the objects, so sneaky!

The site says it should be released in their shop soon, I’m just hoping it’s not going to be crazy expensive, I want one really bad.

UPDATE: The poster is officially on sale now.

Philippe Starck Goes Shopping at Big Lots!

Hello everyone, sorry I’ve been away and so busy that I haven’t posted! I feel horrible about it, but I think I just need to dip my toes back into the blogging world and all will be well again.

So I spotted this article over on The Pursuit Aesthetic and I had to post it, mostly because it’s absolutely ridiculous. Earlier this month, the LA Times got internationally renowned designer and architect Philippe Starck to go shopping at the Big Lots! on Vine, which is about two or three blocks from the Katsuya designed. His task, as he puts it, was to see if you “Can you live elegantly and economically?”

And so he does just that, spending about 45 minutes in the store, looking for items that aren’t over-designed, and going for simplicity more than anything else, a white table cloth being a shining example. It’s quite a ridiculous thing for him to do, but amusing nonetheless. I really love that he drove to the store in an army green Volkswagen Thing as well, a car that an old friend from high school was obsessed with.

P.S. This goes out to the guy who recognized me at Osteria La Buca, that definitely made my night.

Martin de Thurah’s Young Man Falling

A couple weeks ago I popped over to The Hammer for their last night of the year collaborating with the folks over at FLUX for a screening of Martin de Thurah’s newest film, Young Man Falling. Googling Martin de Thurah I realized that he did that AMAZING Carpark North video for their song Human, which I’ve placed under the cut for you all to check out.

The story of Young Man Falling is essentially about the changing emotions of a 17 year old boy. He’s slightly neurotic, and not really sure of his emotions and what he’s feeling. This idea of your feelings becoming physically evident is something that de Thurah does amazingly in all his work, and especially in Young Man Falling. For example, after witnessing a car crash, the boy is so traumatized by the site he sees he can only hear the sound of the dead man’s watch ticking. It’s little details like these that make the film a really stellar one.

There’s the trailer above to watch, as well as his video for Human under the cut, so check those out. And if you get a chance to see Young Man Falling anywhere, I suggest you do it. FLUX also has a great interview with Martin de Thurah on their site, which you can read here.

Scenes from Antarctica on The Big Picture

I’m totally loving this new set from The Big Picture, featuring lots of great photos from Antarctica. It seem like such a surreal place that just happens to be filled with the cutest land birds ever. The photo above was taken at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and in the foreground you can see sastrugi, which are ridges of snow formed by wind erosion. It’s almost like the film noir version of The Empire Strikes Back!
