I picked up the newest ID magazine last week and ever since I’ve been smitten by the cover. It’s big, blocky shapes and obviosus nod toward Spain are great, and it’s simplicity is spot on. And, who doesn’t live a kitty? The art was created by Javier Mariscal of Estudio Mariscal, and you can see more of his work here.

I came across Pedro Lourenço’s work after he added me on Twitter, proving that a silly 48 x 48 px icon can get you noticed. Pedro’s style is really great, using ink and occasionally some computer coloring to make some really rad images. I think it’s his line work that really sells it though. The way each image ends up looking is like he didn’t even try, that all the lines just knew exactly where to be. Excellent work.

I got an email from Greg over at Gama-Go last night telling me that they just opened their first flagship store in the SOMA neighborhood in San Francisco. The shop used to be home to a flooring company, but when the space opened up Gama-Go decided to move in. As Greg says, “We’ve always really liked the SOMA neighborhood & wanted to offer something that you couldn’t really find around here – namely a clothing and gift store!”
I asked Greg if they had and plans to open any stores in the future, and he said, “We’re definitely interested in opening other stores. This first one is great for helping us visualize what we want our stores to look like & what sort of experience we want to offer our customers. We have a strong relationship with LA and of course we love NYC and Chicago. I can also see us opening stores in the Northwest & perhaps overseas. Anyways, that’s all down the road a bit. Right now we’re excited to be giving our home town some love.”
The shop is located at 335 8th St. at Folsom, so if you live in SF or happen to be visiting, definitely go by the shop and say hi. They’re also having an opening party on May 2nd, so go have some beers on Gama-Go!

Last week Wish You Were Here, the brainchild of Fiona and Ben O’Brien aka Ben the Illustrator, released a brand new series of prints called Patternscapes. Each one of these is like an explosion of color, with all of the titles of the prints based around song titles, which I think is a great idea. There are 11 prints total, so I’m sure everyone could find one they like!

Jon Klassen is a Los Angeles based illustrator who in my opinion, is eff’ing amazing. His style is filled with all kinds of great shapes and patterns, and while it has a simplicity to it, his pieces still feel full of depth. He also has uses a really muted color palette for his work which really helps accentuate the mood of his work.
