Los Angeles Graphic Artists Meet-Up

One of my goals for 2010 is to become better acquainted with the artists and designers here in Los Angeles. For example, it feels to me like everyone in New York knows everyone, like they have this semblance of an organized creative culture. Los Angeles on the other hand feels like you might know a couple of people but worlds hardly merge and there’s really no commonality, even though we’re all pretty much in the same boat. That being said I have a few ideas for trying to bring people together that I’ll be speaking about in the coming months.

For now though I’d suggest that you check out the meet and greet being put on by the Graphic Artists Guild this Friday at 7PM. They’ll be meeting up at Dinah’s Family Restaurant on Sepulveda to meet new people and have some design-y conversations. I’m definitely going to try and go even though it’s an hour and half on the bus to get there.

Bluish by Sondre Lerche

Over the weekend I found this lovely version of Sondre Lerche covering Animal Collective’s Bluish. It’s nothing crazy or anything but it definitely shows that the guys from Animal Collective really do write beautiful songs with great lyrics. If you’d like to hear the original be sure to check out Merriweather Post Pavillion and if you’re not familiar with Sondre check out his album Two Way Monologue, which is my personal favorite.

Mashanda Scott

One of my good friends Erin is currently enrolled at Art Center, so he’s always on the lookout for new, fun artists for me to post about. Recenetly Art Center had their big student show and one of the cards he got me was from a lady named Mashanda Scott. Mashanda has created a series of objects that look totally real but are actually sewn together. These plush objects have been painted to mimic the real thing and from what Erin told me the bike in particular looks incredibly life-like.

You can check out better photos of her work by clicking here.

P.S. I also love this fox-y eligible bachelor print she has in her Etsy store.

Tata Vislevskaya

I came across these photos by Russian photographer Tata Vislevskaya and was totally floored by how beautiful they were. The photos are of the the Swiss alps, Gemmi Mountain to be specific, and they look totally surreal. The fact that she cross-processed the photos lends to the unreal feeling and gives the photos their greenish-blue tinge and saturated colors. Doesn’t the second one almost look it was shot in the desert? I want giant prints of these to hang in my living room.

Stacks Is Back.

Michael Leon is one of those guys I’ve known about for what feels like forever, but it all started with a little company called Commonwealth Stacks he started way back in 2000. Well, it’s now 2010 and Michael is back, though this time it’s just Stacks, and they’re now a skateboard company. In Michael’s welcome letter on the Stacks site he wants to create a brand around utility, storytelling and fun… sounds like a good plan to me.

So far the collection is limited to the three skateboards you see above, which come in a small, medium and large sizes. My favorite is the silver one, I think it’s really beautiful looking. I also think it’s funny that the large size only comes in pink. I would love to see some 6; 5″ dude pushing a giant pink skateboard. He’s also got a logo t-shirt and sweatshirt though I’m sure the line will expand over time.

Nice to have you back, Mr. Leon.
