(Untitled): The Movie

The discussion of what is and isn’t art will be an eternal conversation, and (Untitled) explores this contreversial debate. The movie stars Adam Goldberg who plays Adrian, an experimental musician and his brother Josh who is a rather successful painter. Complications ensue when Josh’s girlfriend Madeline starts to fall for Adrian. I love movies that take on the idea of art, especially when it’s more… experimental. This looks like a great movie and I’m really excited to see it. Plus a special appearance by the awesome Vinnie Jones makes me even more excited to see it.

Böreal Show Graphics by Alejandra Román

For a recent class project Alejandra Román created posters and a booklet for a fictional music festival called Böreal. The posters feature some amazing colors and type that’s been laid out extremely well. I’m also in love with the ethereal, hand-drawn treatment she did for the Böreal logo, it’s wonderful to look at. If I passed by one of these posters I would stop to check it out or if I saw the booklet sitting at a record store I’d definitely pick it up.

Matthew Cook

I’m really enjoying the paintings of Matthew Cook, a British illustrator with a knack for loosely detailed images. His subjects range from pictures of houses to portraits of people, but it’s his war imagery that really grabbed me. They seem really simple, like he only used a few strokes to define most of it, but at the same time it feels like you could stare at these pieces for a while and keep finding interesting new details. Really incredible and completely effortless looking.

International Coeliac Disease Symposium Branding by Clever Franke

Coeliac disease, or Celiac disease here in the states, is an autoimmune disease that causes an inflammatory response in the gastrointestinal system to gluten-containing products, such as wheat. The only way to treat the disease is by having a life-long gluten free diet. So coming up with a poster for an international conference on the subject may not be the easiest thing to do. But I think Clever Franke, a Utrecht, Netherlands based design studio, did a pretty amazing job.

The undulating patterns on the cover were inspired by villi and fields of grain waving in the wind, but it still has a very scientific vibe to it. They also did a good job of branding everything else with these patterns as well, giving the conference a uniform feel. Science and conferences don’t need to be boring and this proves it.

Smooth and Smoothie Bench and Table

I’m not sure that I’d ever buy anything like this for my home, but I’m kind of in love with this bench and table combo called Smooth and Smoothie. These gummy pieces of furniture were created by French designer Florent Degourc who created these out of foam and resing, making it seem like these puppies are melting right onto the ground. A fun concept, which might look better in some more muted colors, but still really well done.
