Radiohead at The Hollywood Bowl 2008

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing my favorite band in the world, Radiohead, perform at The Hollywood Bowl, one of the best concert venues I’ve ever experienced. This was my third time seeing Radiohead, the first being post Kid A, and the second being post-Hail to the Thief, the first time being one of my favorite concerts ever, the second being a pretty big disappointment, mostly because Hail to the Thief is crap. But last night could easily be described as one of the single best, if not THE best concert that I’ve ever seen.

The playlist was awesome, hitting songs from every album, and to my enjoyment, they finally didn’t play Creep, thank the gods. Of everything played the most surprising song was definitely Street Spirit, which I totally enjoyed, and was glad they played that instead of The Bends. The most improved song they played was The Gloaming, which is the second video above. I LOATHE The Gloaming, it’s probably my least favorite song ever, but they made it a little dancier, almost a remix of it’s original self, and it was pretty damn rad.

The absolute BEST part of the show though (and possibly the show-stealer), was the lighting. The top video up there is a performance of The National Anthem which should give you a taste of how extremely overwhelming and beautiful the effects were. The Gloaming was also really beautiful and helped to enhance the mood as well. The colors being shot out by those bars was absolutely incredible, I haven’t ever seen anything like this done to this level, it’s a pretty damn hard act to follow.

Hopefully some of you will be seeing Radiohead in the near-future, or possibly already have? I really hope they release a DVD of a live-performance, I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat.

A Bunch of Spore Updates

Wired put up a really great gallery/article with some updates about Spore.
First off, the game is being released September 7th for Mac, PC, and Nintendo DS, all at the same time. That’s still quite a ways away, but Will Wright has figured out how to keep everyone happy till then… a Creature Editor! It’s going to be released a few months before the game comes out, and will allow you to make creatures just like you do in the game. It’ll tell you as soon as Spore comes out, and allow you to import the characters you’ve made as well.

Another cool detail they’ve leaked is that you can start the game at any point. So if you don’t want to start out in the “cell” portion of the game, you can jump directly into the making of your creature. I think this could be helpful especially if you’ve played the game a million times and are sick of being a tiny shrimp in the evolutional tide pool.

I guess there’s also something hidden in the center of the universe, which you can try and find once you get the space travel ability. Will Wright and his creative team have totally done it again, and I’ll be posting more of these nerdy posts as more info becomes available.

Coachella Is Now Dad Friendly

I’ve lived in Los Angeles for almost 3 years now, and I can proudly say that I’ve never been to Coachella. I used to go to the Warped Tour when I was in high school, and I definitely got my fill of masses of sweaty, dirty punks running around being generally obnoxious and spending $9 on a tofu burger patty with no bun. I know it would be cool to see a ton of my favorite bands, but from what I’ve heard it mostly a ton of money and 3 days of hell.

Now seeing this years line up, it should be a lot cheaper for kids to go, seeing as how this is the year their dad will want to join them! Look at those headliners! Jack Johnson?! Roger Waters from Pink Floyd?! Love and Rockets?! Like, I really don’t understand how anyone that’s not approaching their 40′s will enjoy this show!! Since when is Jack Johnson popular?!?!?!

I’d much rather see a bunch of the bands whose names are in tiny writing than any of those big name assholes. It’s almost like Clear Channel bought Coachella and made the concert as lame as humanly possible. What a waste of time.

Update: I think Heath said it best in the comments, that they put the filler bands in bold letters. I still think there are a lot of good bands though.
I’d love to see The Verve, Animal Collective, Battles, Diplo, Jens Lekman, Cut Copy, The Bees, Rogue Wave, Rilo Kiley, Mark Ronson (plus Santo Gold for some Pretty Green!), Islands, The Teenagers, VHS or Beta, Uffie, and The Streets. Man, the last day looks depressing.
