About Your Wallpaper:
I’ve been looking through books of old engravings and woodcuts recently, and have found myself quite inspired by vignettes and imagery created by different engravers for shops, small business’ etc. So the wallpaper I have produced is like a modern day version of one of those images. I have tried to give it a rustic feel through using the warm, Autumn colours. A little touch of the country while you’re sat at your computer!

Some people commented that they wanted my two cents on these wallpapers, so I thought I’d start chiming in now and then with my thoughts. I thoroughly enjoy Adam’s wallpaper, the old-timey feeling is so pleasing and though it was made by computer, you still get the sense of inlaid wood. I’d definitely suggest downloading this now and once autumn comes, putting it back up on your desktop.

C86 | Matt Lyons

Over the weekend I was retweeted by a fellow named Matt Lyons who works under the name of C86, so curious me did some digging and found out that he was a really great artist and illustrator. Matt currently lives and works in London, England, creating these really densely beautiful drawings.

His work tends to be comprised of these really fantastic, colorful shapes that he combines into these really ornate pieces. His color choices are always really interesting as well, bordering on a more muted palate, even though they’re still really vibrant feeling. He also makes some great t-shirt designs and seems to love budgies.

Click here to see Jeefrey’s other wallpaper.

Hey all, Wednesday is here already. I’ve been sleepy all day, so I’m just getting to these awesome wallpapers, my apologies. This week’s desktop comes from the amazingly talented Jeffrey Bowman, an illustrator from London who’s definitely starting to blow up. He’s done work for Converse and Computer Arts, as well as being one half of the creative team over at The Wizard’s Hat. He’s also just recently updated his portfolio, so check that out as well.

For the DWP this week he’s created two wonderful wallpapers. The first is an explosion of shapes and colors, perfect for jazzing up a dark and lonely desktop. The second is nature-y looking collage of wooden logs and cloudy skies all presented in a cool-ish color palette.

I hope you all enjoy these pair, check back next week for more goodness!

Monocle Shop Opening in Brentwood

Last night I had the opportunity to check out the opening of the new Monocle shop in Brentwood. As many of you previously read, I wasn’t so thrilled with their choice of location, seeing as how Brentwood is somewhat on the outskirts of the city.

I arrived around 6 PM and the place was already bustling, elegant looking people walking around, champagne glasses in hand, talking and having a wonderful time. The shop itself was quite modest, it couldn’t be more than 100 sq. ft., but was filled with all kinds of Monocle goodies. The space looked a bit like a study in a modern home, very warm and inviting and smelled woodsy. Overall, it’s a darling little space, tucked into a charming walk through market that features a candy shop and a James Perse store, among others.

Talking to Tyler Brule, he was quite open with the fact that the shop isn’t trying to be hip or cool, “as Monocle already is”, he said, but that it’s meant to introduce the magazine to people who don’t know about it. The other reason is that the Brentwood area is a more affluent neighborhood, willing to spend money on higher end products like their Porter bags or $85 candles. I had imagined that this was part of the reason why it was put there, and was rather satisfied with his candidness about it. It’s merely, business.

Tyler was a very gracious host as well, introducing himself to everyone and even saying goodnight to us as we left, and his staff was extremely nice as well. A couple of them knew me as basically “the guy who thought Monocle was dumb for opening a store in Brentwood”, but they were quite funny about it and realized I didn’t mean any harm in it.

I also got to hang out with Jean Aw from NOTCOT, Ryan Willms from h(y)r collective, Tasha Nita Adams from Blackburn and Sweetzer, and Julie Rasmussen and Kemp Powers from LAist. It’s always fun to run into fellow bloggers, especially when you get champagne for dinner.

If you happen to be near Brentwood, definitely take a pop over to the store, I highly recommend it.

P.S. I stole the top image from Ryan at h(y)r collective, thanks Ryan! Here’s his post of the event as well.

James Joyce

I came across James Joyce’s while looking through the most recent issue of Esquire UK, he did a tiny illustration and I thought it was fun. Sure enough he also did a recent cover of Wallpaper* as well, one that I was really impressed with. Anyhow, James is a British designer who has a studio called One Fine Day, which makes all kinda of neat things.

The images above are flyers he created for the London party It’s Bigger Than. He created these from 2005 to 2007, and with the help of Dave Oscroft, the flyers would be animated and projected in the club as well. Really bright and fun images, I would love to see moving examples of these.

Bobby

P.S. Here’s some examples on YouTube of the flyers being animated. (Thanks, Katie)
