Busy Beaver “Button-O-Matic ” Series Curated by UPSO

In a couple of weeks, Chicago is going to be getting a Busy Beaver shop, you know, those folks who make the great badge/buttons and stuff? Along with opening a new store, they’re also releasing a sweet line of badges that have been curated by Dustin Hostetler, aka UPSO, as a part of their Button-O-Matic series. The badges all come in either 24K gold or nickel and feature the artwork of Tim Biskup, Travis Millard, Damien Correll, Jennifer Daniel, Nicholas Gazin, Ginette Lapalme, STEAK MTN, Spacesick, Luke Ramsey and Geoffrey Todd Smith. I really want a set of these, I would look so much classier when I left the house!

Mel Kadel for Poketo

A couple of weeks ago I visited Poketo headquarters for a little art show featuring a bunch of great artists, but one in particular that I was really glad to meet was Mel Kadel. I talked to her and her hubby Travis Millard for a good chunk of the night, and they’re very excellent people. So it was rad to see that Poketo released a wallet with Mel’s artwork on it, which I’m kind of in love with.

Look at all of those amazing patterns! The detail put into all of those patterns are so rad, and when I look at all the different positions of the feet below the blankets I kinda laugh. You can buy Mel’s wallet here for $20.

When it comes to Devendra Banhart, I feel like you love him or you hate him. Some folks think he’s too weird while others think he’s too weird to be folk. Personally, I have a soft spot for him, his songs are always immaculately crafted and even though they may be a little odd sometimes, who else is making music like this?

So I was rather excited to hear that his awesome side project, Megapuss, was becoming a real project with a real album. I had the great pleasure of seeing Megapuss perform at The Hammer, performing along with a rotating slideshow of Lauren Dukoff’s photographs. The band was hysterical, the songs were a little rusty, but you could definitely see the potential in it. The band is made up of Devendra and Greg Rogove from Priestbird, and together they’ve probably made one of my favorite albums of the year.

The album sounds like a Devendra Banhart album for the most part, but instead of his usual “psych folk” sound, it’s more like psych surf, somewhere between a hippie love in and The Beach Boys. Every song is pretty eclectic, like Duck People Duck Man, about, well… duck people. But behind this trippy spoken word piece is a beautiful song, you just have to listen for it. There’s also the most rocking gay anthem I’ve ever heard, Adam & Steve, which even features a George Michael jam, backed by some bad ass drums. Nonetheless, this album is really easy to listen to, I’ve already gotten several people hooked on it.

Another sweet detail to this album is that the artwork was done by one of the most creative couples out there right now, Travis Millard and Mel Kadel. As it turns out, Devendra and Greg were recording the Megapuss album next door to Travis and Mel, and they happened to meet at the mailbox one day. They got to talking, and the next thing you know, they’ve made an amazing booklet of art. Travis was nice enough to send me some large images from the booklet, as well as some outtakes from it as well that weren’t used.

Everything is under the cut, another 18 images in addition to the ones you see above, so be sure to check those out. And I should probably warn everyone that there are some cartoon dicks and fighting and gore on the photos, so if you work in a church or for Sarah Palin’s advisory committee, you might want to be careful.

You can currently buy the album digitally on iTunes for $9.99, but the physical album doesn’t drop until November 4th, so be sure to mark your calenders, this is truly a gem of an album.

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Travis Millard

Happy Wednesday everyone! I can’t believe the week is already at it’s halfway point! Since I like to mix things up here on the DWP, I’ve decided to go with an extremely lo-fi approach this week. I was also partially influenced by seeing this week’s artist at Simpleasures in all of his bearded glory. This week I’m proud to announce Mr. Travis Millard, one of my absolute favorite artists and the genius behind Fudge Factory Comics. Ever since I first came across Travis’ work I’ve been pretty obsessed, with all the face ripping, fist fights, and all the gritty details in-between.

This weeks wallpaper is actually taken from a tiny piece that Travis did, it’s maybe 3″ x 4″, but I love it because now you can see all those tiny details. To me this wallpaper totally looks like a big, menacing fart cloud, and who wouldn’t want one of these as their work background? Just tell your co-workers that if they keep bothering you that you’ll this thing will mess their day up.

Simpleasures

Today is going to be a pretty fun day, as it’s the opening of Simpleasures, a new event here in LA that’s bringing together the best and brightest in music and art. This first time is “showcasing independent publishing and experimentation in zine making from Los Angeles and beyond.” The whole thing is being put on by the folks at Studio Number One, Forest, and The Dutch Press, and is taking place at the Sublminal Projects Gallery. There’s going to be a ton of rad artists there like Travis Millard, Souther Salazar, Mel Kadel, and Liam Devowski as well as booths and things for sale from Secret Headquarters, Giant Robot, 826LA and a ton more. Not only that, but there’s also going to be music by DJ Diabetic (Shep Fairey), Daedelus, Professor Canteloupe, Danny Holloway, Sodapop, and Lucky Dragon.

The event should be really awesome, it goes from 1PM to 9PM, and there’s even a panel discussion with Souther Salazar and Travis Millard at 7PM, which I imagine will be pretty damn funny. So if you’re in LA you should definitely stop by, it should be amazing.
